Can I play online games over the ResNet network?
Absolutely! Help yourself, and have fun. However, if your online game requires that you run one machine as a server, you will need to host the server off campus. (See the ResNet User Agreement, item # 7).
What must I do to play my XBox, PS3, etc. over the ResNet network?
In order for your game console to function over the ResNet, it must meet four requirements:
- A physical address, (also called a MAC address or hardware address,) which must be registered for DHCP access
- A web browser
- DHCP enabled
- Must accept cookies
To use your gaming system on the ResNet network, you must register the physical address the same way that you would a computer.
Options for connecting your game console to work on ResNet (note: these options may not work for all gaming systems):
- Residents can use the in-room wired ethernet connection to connect to Resnet with a gaming console that supports DHCP and has a browser that supports SSL & cookies. Residents log into Resnet using the same procedure as with a computer.
- When wireless Internet is available, residents can connect to the wireless networking using a gaming console that supports WPA2 Enterprise.
- Residents can use a University-recommended NAT device (see list below) to connect a gaming system using an in-room wired ethernet jack. Gaming console must support DHCP only, and the user's computer and console are both connected through the NAT device. (Note: This is the recommended option for Xbox 360.)
- Residents can use the in-room wired ethernet jack to connect a gaming console through the user's computer (Internet Connection Sharing, etc.). Gaming console must support DHCP only.
- Not Acceptable: ANY wireless NAT/router devices or use of NAT/router devices not recommended by the University
University-recommended NAT devices
* Note: Wireless NAT/router devices are not permitted on the University network.
Support
Aside from what is written in this page, the University does not guarantee technical support for game consoles over the ResNet network. You are ultimately responsible for all setup and configuration of game consoles. Please consult the setup guides below for questions.
